A Cease Fire for all the Wrong Reasons

The only winner in a schedualed 72 hours cease fire is Egypt’s Sisi who will emerge a diplomatic hero. Israel and the Palestinians are acquiescing not so much because they long for peace but, rather, because they fear the alternative.

Simply put Hamas is not an army and the stress of waging a guerilla war for 4 weeks is immeasurable. Regardless, of small tactical victories, achieved through tunnels and mortar fire, Hamas knows, full well, military victory in an assymetric war is an impossibility. Tanks, and a professional ariforce will always defeat klashinkovs.

For Israel the hemoraging has been in the diplomatic arena. After hitting multiple UNRWA schools, killing over 300 children they received a very public tongue lashing from their clasest ally: the U.S. To say the relationship is strained is as obvious as saying Elizabeth Taylor was both beautiful and an actress. No one in their right mind believes Israel destroyed all tunnels but Israeli public will wink as Bibi walks away from a potentially deadly trap.

So lest you start clapping for the combatents who have come to their senses stop right there: they have come to their knees.

About Amr Khalifa

An analyst, a political comentator on the uber complex Egyptian and MENA scene. I may not have every answer but I know the questions to ask. When not publishing in Ahram Online, Mada Masr, Daily News Egypt and Muftah I love the dynamic of the short story. If you adore the written word you have come to the right place. Pull up a chair and join me for a cup of literary tea.
